Fashion-forward men on the coasts may be updating their wardrobes this fall with slim lines, bold patterns, V-neck sweaters, bow ties and fedoras.

But men in Arkansas are using such “fringe items” in small quantities to update the basics already in their closets, says Greg Herr, longtime manager of Greenhaw’s Men’s Wear in Little Rock.

Think cashmere blazers paired with high-end jeans, flat-front trousers worn with a mini-checked sports shirt, or solid black suit with an open-collar shirt and patterned pocket square.

All come together for an overall dressier look.

“Men this year are taking it up a notch and not just wearing tees with jeans,” says Sean Cullers, buyer for Baumans in Little Rock.

Solid black suits and overcoats are de rigueur for well-dressed men, Herr says, noting there is a move this season to two-button and vented blazers. Update the look with a selection of French-cuff and underbutton collared shirts, he says.

Golds, reds and plums are acceptable accent colors, as are mixed patterns. Pinstripes and mini-checks can play well together, for instance.

“Don’t be afraid to mix and match … within reason,” says Herr.

But keep the look sharp and tailored.

“Items are more tailored, not baggy,” says Kimberly Cyr, buyer for Masons in Fayetteville. “From pants to jackets, it’s much more slimming.”

Properly accessorize by choosing silver-toned belt buckles, black leather gloves and socks in subtle patterns. Wear lace-up shoes with suits and slip-ons with casual attire. Suede shoes in shades of butterscotch, brown and black “are always good for fall,” but be choosy about wearing them, Herr says.
“Suedes, to me, tend to be a little less formal,” he says. “They are good for day time, but certainly not for a business meeting or formal event.”
